Designing the Ideal PK–12 Art Classroom
The ideal PK–12 art classroom is designed to meet the needs of a comprehensive art education consisting of all four strands of a Discipline Based Art Education (DBAE): art production, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics. In accordance with this goal, the classroom includes spaces for lectures, presentations, display of student artwork, and plenty of storage. In the ideal PK–12 art classroom, safety is a priority and the floor plan accommodates students who have special needs.
An art library and resource area provide students with a range of materials to inspire creativity, while skylights and a large bank of windows let in plenty of natural light. This classroom is well-equipped to offer students a wide range of traditional artmaking activities from drawing to ceramics. In addition, an area of the classroom is dedicated exclusively to digital technology with the recognition that computers are not only indispensible for research purposes, but also for the production of photography, animation, video, 2d and 3d digital art, video games, and graphic design.
